Vedic Astrology Guide
The 5000-year-old Indian astrology system — rooted in the sidereal zodiac, centered on the Moon, and enriched by 27 lunar mansions. Here's how Jyotish works, how it differs from Western astrology and where to begin reading your own chart.
Vedic vs Western astrology
🕉️ Vedic (Jyotish)
- Zodiac: sidereal (fixed to the constellations)
- Primary sign: Moon sign (Rashi)
- Sub-divisions: 27 Nakshatras (lunar mansions)

The 27 Nakshatras — lunar mansions
The nakshatras are the soul of Vedic astrology. The zodiac is divided into 27 lunar mansions, each 13°20' wide. Each nakshatra has a ruling deity, a symbol, a sacred body part, a primary gana (type), and distinct personality markers. Your birth nakshatra (the nakshatra of your Moon) shapes personality more precisely than your moon sign alone.
The 27 nakshatras are: Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika, Rohini, Mrigashira, Ardra, Punarvasu, Pushya, Ashlesha, Magha, Purva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Vishakha, Anuradha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati.
Dashas — the timing system
One of Vedic astrology's unique gifts is the Vimshottari Dasha system — a 120-year cycle where each planet rules a specific period of your life. Knowing which dasha you're in tells you which themes, challenges and gifts are active right now. This is why Vedic astrology is considered more powerful for timing.
How to start
- Get your Vedic birth chart. Needs exact birth date, time and city. Free calculators online (search "Vedic birth chart calculator").
- Note your Moon sign (rashi). This is often different from your Western sun sign — don't panic, both are valid descriptions.
- Find your nakshatra. The lunar mansion of your Moon. This is where real personality detail lives.
- Check your current dasha. Which planet's period are you in? That's the main theme of this phase of your life.
- Read lightly at first. Vedic astrology is deep. Treat it as a lifelong study, not a weekend hack.
